hello my name is Dr. Neil Hopkin and I’m
the principal of Sun mark school today
I’m going to talk to you about the four
key strategies for secondary students as
they’re preparing to study for their
examinations there are four different
levels that are split into two different
types surface level learning and deep
level learning surface level learning is
the kind of thing that you’re doing in
class or immediately outside of class as
you’re preparing for your exams or
you’re just reflecting on the learning
that you’ve had in class so there are
some key strategies that you would want
to ensure that you had as a secondary
student the first is around note-taking
and particularly within note-taking it’s
the ability to summarize what you’ve
been taught a whole strategy for your
learning is based on how much you are
reflecting and reformatting and
reconfiguring the kinds of things that
you heard rather than just learning a
particular aspect that you’ve been
taught so for instance the model isn’t –
for the teacher to pour knowledge into
your head for you to regurgitated an
exam what you’ll find is under pressure
that you can’t manage to do that the
most important thing is for you to
reformulate what you’ve learnt in your
mind now when you’re thinking about your
notes that means that you might be
underlining or highlighting particular
key words or you might even develop
mnemonics and so a new word of a
collection of the initial letters of a
particular framework of things that you
want to learn that’s important being
able to outline what the whole topic is
about and to give broad brushstrokes
understanding of what you’re learning is
very important to set a context for your
learning and in that sense it helps you
to organize not only your particular
learning for that one aspect but even
the broader notes those are all vital
skills for you to have when you’re
thinking about the kind of know
that you want to take but more than
anything when you’re learning them and
you’re rehearsing the particular
arguments of your subject what you’re
doing is training your working memory
now that surface level learning but to
consolidate that as you move throughout
the academic year what you want to do is
to interleave your learning and what
that means is you put the new learning
in in amongst some of the older learning
so that you don’t find that your old
learning decays over time really
everyone’s a bit like Homer Simpson
there’s only so much space in them
there’s only so much space in their
memory for remembering a certain amount
of facts so if you want to improve that
you have to work and exercise your
memory muscle and the best way to do
that is by interleaving your learning
now clearly your teacher will be giving
you feedback throughout the year in
terms of how you’re performing and the
quality of your work learn how to
receive that how to engage with your
teacher to inquire more and to learn
more about what they really thought
about what you were saying and what you
were thinking and then focus on those in
a very deliberate way they’re your
development points and we call that
deliberate practice where you’re
focusing your attention on refining a
particular skill now deep level learning
is the next phase and in order to really
learn in a deep manner you need to
develop metacognitive strategies
that’s a zooming out from the nitty
gritty the grassroots detail of your
studies
zooming out and seeing the big picture
and when you do that what you need to do
is to elaborate to add more talk around
that subject again learning to broaden
your vocabulary around the particular
area of learning that’s crucial and make
sure that you perhaps are adding to that
using concept maps and more detail that
adds more imagery and ways to secure
that knowledge in your mind then the
final stage is to consolidate the deep
learning and the consolidation of deep
learning is all about you it’s all about
the self so using self-talk
talking your way through a problem or
self questioning
where you had questions to what it is
that you think you need to be wondering
about this particular topic the thing
that you’re wrestling with learning to
articulate your misunderstandings is a
really important way of consolidating
your learning and then of course having
your own explanations in your words that
you own and that you have created and
reflecting those with your teacher and
checking that those are the right pieces
I advice that’s crucial so throughout
the consolidation of deep learning
you’re self-monitoring you’re monitoring
how well you’re retaining knowledge and
how clear your understanding of that
knowledge is for more educational videos
